P is for PINK FLOYD
by Rick
Emerson (from Rick Emerson's Rock'N'Roll A-Z)
There are very few things in this world that are are absolutes. Fewer still
are the universals when it
comes to music. What can we agree on? Back in
Black...'Smells Like Teen
Spirit'...and Pink Floyd. From Heavy Metal to hipper-than-thou Hawthorne types, EVERYONE has tuned in,
tuned out, gotten high, felt low, slept with someone, or simply drifted off
to sleep to the sounds of Pink Floyd. Their sales set records, and their sound set standards. From studio
craftsmanship to over the top lights and effects, no one was ever quite like
the Floyd.
Starting as an avant-garde art rock band helmed by Syd
Barrett, Floyd
created underground stirs with
their mix of off-kilter stage theatrics and improvisational style. As Barrett descended
into madness, he was dismissed from the group
-- his place as
band leader taken by Roger Waters, who steered the group in a more commercial
and focused direction. Basing their songs on the slow decay of modern life, Pink Floyd created some
of the most enduring song cycles in music history, with the interplay of
Waters lyrics and guitarist Dave Gilmour's melodies
creating the soundtrack to contemporary isolation.
From Dark Side of the Moon to The
Wall, Pink Floyd's
albums were more than works of art. They became cultural fixtures, part of
the common language of music. To hail them, to hate them, to love them or
loathe them...one must know them. For they changed
everything.
And that, Kyle, is why P is for Pink
Floyd.
The SoN FloydShow
Although none of the members of Sons Of Nothing had yet been born when
Pink Floyd's career began, they all grew up as fans, with the music in
their blood. What began as an occasional cover tune at early
SoN concerts
became a full-fledged tribute show by the summer of
2002.
FloydShow performances
involve the four core members of Sons Of Nothing
supplemented by additional musicians, mesmerizing video production,
quadrophonic sound, and other theatrical goodies aimed at providing the most
authentically Floydian experience possible.
The Pink Floyd songs performed by
Sons Of
Nothing include popular favorites as well as more obscure selections that diehard fans are ecstatic to
hear. From early psychedelic jams to complete performances of multi-platinum classics like Dark Side Of The Moon
and even occasional selections from Floyd members' solo albums, every era is
touched upon, and more songs are always being added.
